For the first time artists were allowed to use backing tracks instead of the live orchestra.

Televoting was tested for the first time, the five countries to trial this were Austria, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

The Barbara Dex award was introduced, awarded to the artist who has the worst outfit on for their performance.

Winning song 'Love Shine a Light' is widely considered by fans to be one off the best winning songs of the contest, it went on to achieve chart success all over Europe.
