1996 Facts

The voting table had a makeover and became digital for the first time - filmed in blue screen.

The unbroadcast semi final saw 7 countries not qualify including Germany. This was the first time Germany would not be featured at the contest. They were especially annoyed having gone to the expense of a national selection show which produced a song and artist who never got to compete. This lead to the EBU having to consider many ways in which to incorporate the new countries of Europe who wanted to compete at Eurovision.
