1993 Facts

The venue is the smallest town to date to host Eurovision, Millstreet has a population of 1,500 people!

This was the first year that nations of the former Yugoslavia debuted, however war was still raging in the region and the Bosnian entrant Fazla and his backing singers had to run to a helicopter through the gun fire to fly out of the country. The conductor was left behind so Irish conductor Noel Kelehan stood in.

The production team had struggled all day to get a phone connection to Sarajevo, it had failed many times. The moment during the live show when a squeeking, cracking phone connection was made and a faint voice said 'Hello Millstreet, this is Sarajevo' has become a classic Eurovision moment.
